Murray
Henman has lived in Brisbane's western suburbs for almost
20 years and is currently studying a Masters of Urban and
Regional Planning at QUT. Murray has worked for a wide range
of organisations from small charities to government departments
to investment banks in Australia the UK and Japan.
Murray
has always enjoyed participating in various community activities,
which has included roles as a leader of Uniting Church youth
groups and conferences, editor of the local Neighbourhood
Watch newsletter, 9 years as a volunteer for the Brisbane
International Film Festival and activities in Amnesty International,
Oxfam, Queensland Cinematheque.
These
diverse experiences have given him some valuable experiences
different people and different organisations. He cares about
many local issues including transport, planning and development
issues, which are important in the Oxley area.
"For
too long, the local area has been taken for granted and
has not been provided with the services that normal people
need. Now they are paying for government inaction. State
and Federal governments bicker over funding of projects
while people watch and wait impatiently (growing more cynical?)."
"Common
sense dictates that we cannot keep building more and more
roads to accommodate more and more cars unless we bulldoze
more and more houses. Common sense also dictates that we
should have built the Springfield rail line ten years ago,
providing people with better options to get to work, school
and shops."
"What
we need are representative that are willing to take decisions
for the long-term good rather than short-term votes."
When
he's not busy studying or working Murray enjoys cycling,
visiting the cinema, photography, and reading novels and
history.
