Peter
Kerin, is part way through a degree in Micro-Electronic
Engineering at Griffith University Nathan Campus. Peter
owns his own commercial cleaning business, Kerin & Singh.
He also works at the Full Moon Hotel in Shorncliffe. Peter
is married with his first child on the way.
Peter
believes that Australia needs a more balanced Parliament
because the current government has mismanaged its power.
"As
the Australian nation grows, we need a more diverse Parliament
that can effectively represent the needs of Australians
now and in the future. I have lived in the Dickson electorate
for most of my life and I believe that there is poor leadership
and misrepresentation of the needs and wants of the Dickson
electorate at a Federal Level."
Platform
Areas/ Change in Dickson:
Education:
Peter is currently studying at university so has a clear
understanding of the hardships of balancing education, work,
family and life in general on little income. He says our
tertiary education system needs to be affordable and accessible
to all.
Technology:
As a student of micro-electronic engineering Peter has come
to recognise that Australia is lagging behind when it comes
to its use of technology. With China becoming a super-power
and the fast growing requirements of keeping up with the
rest of the world, Australia needs to invest more to increase
its technological standards.
Small
Business:
Peter considers that Small Business is the backbone of our
community, providing jobs, economic growth, and positive
flow on effects to the surrounding community. As a small
business owner he feels that people who want to start small
businesses should have more government support to achieve
their goals, such as financial and administrative help,
through tax incentives.
Health:
About to become a father himself, Peter is becoming increasingly
aware of and worried about Qld health system. Lengthy waiting
periods for important surgery, waiting times in emergency
rooms etc. concern him. He believes Australians should not
have to take out private health insurance to receive adequate
health care. Peter wants to see funding of Medicare prioritised,
and believes that universal access to good quality health
care is what all hard working Australians deserve.
Welfare:
Peter believes that, with economic growth it is important
not to forget vulnerable people in our society such as the
disabled, single parent families, lower income earners and
students. He wants to see the gap between the well off and
the poor lessened.
