Qld Democrats Candidate for Groom

Shalina became a member of the Democrats in 2006 because she knew that simply voting for a change of government would not be enough, it would take active participation in our democracy to make a difference. The Coalition Government has failed for ten years to address the issues most important to her - the protection of basic human rights, sustainable water use in a changing climate and Indigenous welfare issues.

Shalina graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Wollongong in 1998 and has worked as a solicitor in the field of medical defence for the past three years. She is a member of the Queensland Law Society and has been admitted to practice law in the New South Wales andQueensland Supreme Courts and the High Court of Australia.

A long time Democrat supporter, Shalina believes that the politics of the major parties, and the narrow focus of others, should never come before a balanced approach that values common sense and fairness.

Shalina wants to see balance return to the Senate, so that everyone's voice can be heard, and a fair go guaranteed.

She has been disappointed to see the Howard government's abuse of power in the Senate over its last term when it has pursued its own ideology ahead of the interests of most Australians.

Issues Shalina wants to address during this campaign include:

  • Protecting human rights particularly the rights of the most disadvantaged;
  • Animal welfare issues particularly the development of humane farming practices;
  • Closing the education and health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians;
  • Establishing a paid maternity scheme for all working women;
  • The use of Queensland water for people, not power stations through the rapid development of geothermal, solar and wind energy;
  • Federal Government action on climate change;
  • Improving health care in rural areas;
  • Increasing funding for universities to ensure that they are accessible to everyone not just the rich;
  • Repealing VSU legislation that has severely cut the amount of money available for student services and facilities on campuses.
