Terry Shaw ---- -------------- -- - ---
Qld Democrats Candidate for Wide Bay

Terry Shaw has been a member of the Australian Democrats for over a decade. He believes in the base principles that the party has talked about since it was formed - justice and democracy and it was these principles put into action that attracted him to join. The common sense approach of finding the common ground between opponents and helping them to produce a positive outcome is the fundamental reason why the Australian Democrats are crucial to effective government in this country.

Terry is married with four children. He has been an active member of his community and has been involved in a wide variety of activities, ranging from residents action groups to P&Cs, business associations, progress associations, sporting clubs and environmental groups . He works as purchasing officer for a bedding manufacturer. In the past he has worked as a council officer, taxi driver, bottle shop attendant, river catchment group co-ordinator and a consultant assisting businesses and individuals to work with and resolve issues with government

Terry is a very practical person who enjoys making things work better. He has many ideas and though they are not Democrat policy - yet - he's persistent and he's working on it. If elected he would pursue a number of improvements to how our country is run including:

  • Seeking a change in the business tax system to reward businesses that become more sustainable with a lower tax rate.
  • Helping farmers to fund environmental work on their properties by allowing them to trade the excess carbon credits that the vegetation and crops produce over and above their greenhouse gases produced by production.
  • Calling for politicians' salaries to be set as a multiple of the minimum wage - if the people at the bottom of the ladder don't get a pay rise, why should politicians?
  • Proposing that elected candidates who don't keep election promises be barred from standing for parliament
  • Seeking to make far more information available under Freedom of Information. In particular the exemptions granted on the basis that information is commercial in confidence need to be limited, as do exemptions for many cabinet papers.
  • Pushing for more government expenditure on scientific and medical research.
  • Proposing that a national trust fund be set up to support worldwide patenting and commercial exploitation of Australian developed technologies.
  • Supporting the establishment of a scheme where the costs of obtaining an Australian patent are assisted in return for a share of any income from exploitation until the patent costs are repaid.
  • Helping to make getting into a first home more affordable by limiting the number of properties that could be negatively geared and using the tax dollars saved to provide tax deductions for first home buyer's interest.
  • Working to kill bracket creep once and for all. It is a disgrace that politicians are complicit in over-taxing and then use the money they should never have taken to give tax cuts at election time.
  • Supporting massive reinvestment in our transport infrastructure and ports.
