candidate for bonner takes a stand
Vicki
was born in Brisbane in 1979. She grew up in Logan and was
educated at a State Primary School, Moreton Bay College
for girls, Yeronga Institute of TAFE and the Queensland
University of Technology. She has a bachelor degree in Business
with a major in accounting.
Vicki
has worked as an accountant and auditor in the self managed
superannuation industry for ten years. Having worked for
a number of respected second-tier accounting and financial
planning firms in Brisbane, she now works for herself.
As a
young person, Vicki saw first-hand how government decisions
can adversely affect one's family and community. She helped
her parents run their small retail business, which managed
to struggle through the recession of the early 90's only
to have their livelihood destroyed by a State Labor government
decision to allow extended trading hours for big retail
supermarket chains.
During
this time, Vicki & her parents became involved in community
action groups against the Rochedale Dump (a Liberal party
initiative) and the Eastern Tollway (a Labor party initiative).
These experiences instilled in her a deep mistrust of the
two major parties and a personal awareness of her responsibility
to speak up about destructive government policy.
At her
first Federal election in 1998, Vicki voted for the Australian
Democrats in the Senate because she knew they would not
sell out to wealthy interest groups such as labor unions
or big business. The Australian Democrats history of campaigning
for a common sense approach to developing a sustainable
economy was also very appealing to her.
Prior
to joining the Australian Democrats, Vicki was a volunteer
at her local nursing home. She developed close relationships
with a number of elderly residents there but was often saddened
by the limited resources the facility had in order to hire
the appropriate level of staff. Having done a fair bit of
accounting work for wealthy, self-funded pensioners, her
experience at the nursing home highlighted a vast gap in
the living standards of elderly Australians relying on government
assistance.
Vicki
is the current Qld Treasurer for the Australian Democrats.
She is also the Qld Convener of the Young Australian Democrats
which represents members of the party who are under the
age of 30. The issues of particular interest to her are
aged care, water, tertiary education, housing affordability
and small business.
In her
spare time, Vicki enjoys playing a game of touch football
with the same team she has played with for over five years.
She is a member of the Brisbane Lions Football Club and
the Brisbane Bullets Basketball Club whom she enjoyed watching
win the NBL Premiership earlier this year for the first
time in 20 years. Professionally, Vicki is a member of her
local chamber of commerce, the Association of Taxation and
Management Accountants and CPA Australia. She lives in the
suburb of Upper Mt Gravatt with her husband.
