WHO
DO YOU WANT HOLDING THE BALANCE OF POWER IN THE SENATE?
Who
do you want in the Senate negotiating with either a Labor
or Coalition government?
Who has the experience and record on amending legislation
for the common good when needed, blocking bills when necessary,
and knowing what to let through?
The
people of Queensland can trust Senator Bartlett's promise
to exercise Senate power effectively, reasonably and responsibly,
because his record over the last ten years speaks louder
than any words. That is how he has always worked to represent
Queensland and how he will continue to work.

A
SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT - PROTECITNG OUR THREATENED SPECIES
The
federal govenrment has been happy to intervene on a whole
range of issue in the last few years, yet they are sitting
to one side and letting one of our nation's most iconic species
get pushed inexorably towards extinction in the wild. The
federal Environment Minister has a range of powers available
under the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation
(EPBC) Act to stop the decline of the koala and its habitat,
should they wish to use them. Maintaining and strengthening
our bio-diversity is a key element of any effective environmental
policy, which includes protecting our threatened species.

AUSTRALIA'S
WELFARE - PROTECTING THE VULNERABLE
At
a time of such great economic prosperity, it is disgraceful
that we are seeing more and more Australians slipping through
the cracks and being forced into poverty. During the
last decade under a Coalition government the cracks have gotten
wider. Groups
such as single parents, veterans, carers, and people with
a disability, those with a mental illness, the long-term unemployed,
Indigenous Australians, migrants and refugees are disproportionately
represented in the poverty statistics. These groups
mustn’t be allowed to continue to be a statistic of an economically
rich but socially impoverished government approach to welfare.

RIGHTS
& FREEDOMS ELECTION PLATFORM - RESTORING AND REBUILDING
Voters
have a clear choice on election day. Since
the Coalition gained control of the Senate in 2004 the foundations
on which our rights and freedoms are based have been slowly
chipped away. What Australia needs now is for these rights
and freedoms to not only be restored but to enshrined in law.
The
Democrats offer a real independent choice for the public and
commit to working to achieve a balance between ensuring our
security and restoring our freedoms.

HOUSING
ELECTION PLATFORM - AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE, SECURE
It's
time to bite the bullet and develop a comprehensive national
housing strategy which properly examines all the different
tax breaks, grants and incentives to make sure they are not
making things worse through market distortions and to look
for ways to get maximum public benefit out of such large amounts
of public money.

INDIGENOUS
ELECTION PLATFORM - PUT OUR FIRST PEOPLE FIRST
Since
the inception of the Democrats, we have had a strong and proud
record of advocating for fairer government policy and more
informed public attitudes on Indigenous issues.
Our consistent
record of action, not just talk , shows that we can be trusted
and relied on to be the voice of common sense in the Senate,
providing priority and reasoned passion to this crucial area.
